What is an ETA?

Electronic travel authorization (ETA) is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. The authorization is linked electronically to your passport, is valid for 5 years or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

A valid eTA and a travel document (passport) will facilitate your entry to Canada. Once at the border, a customs officer will ask to see your passport or travel document and ask you a few questions. The officer will then decide if you can enter Canada.

To submit an ETA request via this website, you must have a valid passport, email address and credit card.

How long can I stay in Canada?

Most visitors are granted a maximum stay of six months. A customs officer at the port of entry will determine the exact length of stay granted in Canada upon arrival, and will indicate in your passport the date by which you must have left Canada.

If you wish to stay longer than your authorized stay, you must request an extension of stay at least 30 days before the authorized end of your stay.

If you do not have a passport issued by an eligible country, you cannot apply for an eTA online. However, you may be eligible for another type of visa, directly at a Canadian visa office.

What information do I need to complete an eTA online application?

In order to complete an online ETA application, you will need to provide biographical data such as name, date and place of birth, gender, marital status, address, nationality and passport number. You will also need to answer a few questions about your background to determine if you can enter Canada. For example, you will be asked about your job and how much money you have to visit Canada, and if you have any health problems.

Do age limits apply?

No age limit applicable. All holders of an eligible passport, regardless of their age, must apply for an eTA.

Can I include my children on the same online ETA application?

No. Each person must submit a personal eTA request. Even if your child (ren) appear on your passport, a separate eTA application must be submitted for each child.

How long will the treatment of the ETA take?

Visas are generally processed and approved, with confirmation sent, within 1 working day (s). Depending on the time your request and your passport details are submitted, processing may take up to 3 business day (s).

What should I do if my eTA application is not immediately approved?

Although most eTAs are delivered in less than 1 business day (s), some may take longer. In a small number of cases, additional information is required for the request to be approved. We will contact you by e-mail and advise you on how to proceed. We may ask you:

  • An in-person interview at the nearest Canadian visa office.

What happens when requests are not approved?

If your application is not accepted, you should contact the nearest Canadian visa office.

I did not receive a confirmation email
