FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is an AVE?
Electronic travel authorization (AVE) is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. The authorization is linked electronically to your passport, is valid for 5 years or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
A valid eTA and a travel document (passport) will facilitate your entry to Canada. Once at the border, a customs officer will ask to see your passport or travel document and ask you a few questions. The officer will then decide if you can enter Canada.
To submit an AVE request via this website, you must have a valid passport, email address and credit card.
How long can I stay in Canada?
Most visitors are granted a maximum stay of six months. A customs officer at the port of entry will determine the exact length of stay granted in Canada upon arrival, and will indicate in your passport the date by which you must have left Canada.
If you wish to stay longer than your authorized stay, you must request an extension of stay at least 30 days before the authorized end of your stay.

If you do not have a passport issued by an eligible country, you cannot apply for an eTA online. However, you may be eligible for another type of visa, directly at a Canadian visa office.
